CA Legislature Passes Medicaid Expansion

The state Legislature on Saturday passed a major piece of the federal Affordable Care Act, opting to expand Medicaid to 1.4 million low-income Californians even as Republican lawmakers raised concerns about the program’s future costs. The voting in the Democratically controlled Assembly and Senate came as part of the final votes on the state budget for the coming fiscal year.
Several Democratic lawmakers called the vote historic.

Visalia Man Sentenced on Child Molestation Charges

A Visalia man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for child molestation. A Tulare County judge handed down the punishment Friday. Back in January a jury found 50-year-old George Lopez guilty on a number of counts. Authorities say there were multiple victims.

Highlights Of State Budget

The Legislature is sending Governor Jerry Brown a budget that he’s expected to sign before the end of the month. Some of the highlights include about one billion dollars more on K-12 public schools over the next two years. The UC, CSU and community college systems would receive a budget increase of about five percent. It restores dental care for adult Medi-Cal recipients and repeals the seven-visit annual limit on doctor’s office visits.

Brown Plan Gives Big $$ to Close Education Gap

California schools will receive an infusion of more than $3.6 billion in extra money this year, much of it targeted to the neediest students as part of a redistribution plan pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown. The Democratic governor hopes that dramatically reshaping how state aid is handed out will correct decades of inequality between districts. He also wants to give local schools much of the responsibility to decide how the money is spent.

The STB previously ruled that it has oversight of the project, but on Thursday the agency granted an exemption to the state.
