The Sequoia National Forest will hold a series of public meetings in July to continue to dialogue and receive input from the public and interested stakeholders on Forest Plan Revision.
The meetings will be held in Porterville and Kernville. As part of the current assessment phase, the Forest Service has developed a series of topic papers and made them available for review and feedback in the Living Assessment WIKI on Our Forest Place, www.ourforestplace.ning.com.

CA Legislature Passes Medicaid Expansion
The state Legislature on Saturday passed a major piece of the federal Affordable Care Act, opting to expand Medicaid to 1.4 million low-income Californians even as Republican lawmakers raised concerns about the program’s future costs. The voting in the Democratically controlled Assembly and Senate came as part of the final votes on the state budget for the coming fiscal year.
Several Democratic lawmakers called the vote historic.
Visalia Man Sentenced on Child Molestation Charges
A Visalia man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for child molestation. A Tulare County judge handed down the punishment Friday. Back in January a jury found 50-year-old George Lopez guilty on a number of counts. Authorities say there were multiple victims.
Highlights Of State Budget
The Legislature is sending Governor Jerry Brown a budget that he’s expected to sign before the end of the month. Some of the highlights include about one billion dollars more on K-12 public schools over the next two years. The UC, CSU and community college systems would receive a budget increase of about five percent. It restores dental care for adult Medi-Cal recipients and repeals the seven-visit annual limit on doctor’s office visits.

Hwy 99 Detour Planned
Caltrans will close northbound Highway 99 south of Tulare at the Avenue 184 overpass bridge starting June 17 between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and June 18 through June 21 between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night. All northbound Highway 99 traffic will be detoured at the Avenue 184 off ramp and back on to the highway just north of the overpass. Eastbound and westbound Avenue 184 at the Highway 99 overcrossing will be closed during the same period
Tulare Chamber announces CEO resignation
Tulare Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Nina Akin will step down at the end of the month. Akin, who submitted her resignation earlier this month, will relocate to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Akin has served as the chamber CEO since Sept. 2010. She was previously with the Visalia Chamber of Commerce where she was the director of membership and sales.
Brown Plan Gives Big $$ to Close Education Gap
California schools will receive an infusion of more than $3.6 billion in extra money this year, much of it targeted to the neediest students as part of a redistribution plan pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown. The Democratic governor hopes that dramatically reshaping how state aid is handed out will correct decades of inequality between districts. He also wants to give local schools much of the responsibility to decide how the money is spent.
ersight Board OKs High Speed Rail
A federal railroad oversight board has given approval to the California High-Speed Rail Authority to start construction in the Central Valley.
The Surface Transportation Board ruled Thursday that the California project could start building the first 65 miles of the project from Merced to Fresno, as planned.
The STB previously ruled that it has oversight of the project, but on Thursday the agency granted an exemption to the state.
