Visalia Stabbing

Police in Visalia are inves­ti­gat­ing a stab­bing that left a 29 year old woman injured.
The inci­dent took place Thurs­day after­noon in the park­ing lot of the Smart and Final store on Cen­ter Avenue. Author­i­ties say the vic­tim was approached by a man who demanded her cell phone and money. When the woman turned to run away, she was stabbed in the stom­ach. The vic­tim was taken to Kaweah Delta Med­ical Cen­ter with non-life threat­en­ing injuries.

Corcoran Prison Inmate Killed

Inves­ti­ga­tors at Cor­co­ran State Prison are inves­ti­gat­ing the mur­der of an inmate serv­ing time for mur­der. Author­i­ties say Del­bert Miller was found dead in his cell Thurs­day morning.

The NBA has announced the reserves for the 2013 All-Star Game. Spurs for­ward Tim Dun­can earned his 14th All-Star selec­tion, while team­mate Tony Parker is headed to his fifth. Miami’s Chris Bosh earned his eighth trip to the All-Star Game. The 62nd All-Star Game is Feb­ru­ary 17th in Houston.

State Approves Milk Price Increase

Val­ley dairy farm­ers will be get­ting paid more for their milk. The Cal­i­for­nia Depart­ment of Food and Agri­cul­ture has agreed to an increase of about three-cents per gal­lon. Farm­ers hit hard by years of drought and sky­rock­et­ing feed prices have been ask­ing the state to raise milk prices. Some farm­ers say the three-cent increase still isn’t enough.

Man Killed In Pixley

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Depart­ment is inves­ti­gat­ing a homi­cide in Pix­ley. Deputies were called to the area of Main Street and Comp­ton Avenue late yes­ter­day after­noon where they found the body of the vic­tim. Wit­nesses say the man had been argu­ing with some­one in a vehi­cle and sec­onds later shots were fired. The victim’s name has not been released.

Governor Calls Health Care Special Session

Gov­er­nor Jerry Brown says one of the state’s chal­lenges this year will be imple­ment­ing the fed­eral Afford­able Care Act, which he’s called a spe­cial ses­sion to address. Anthony Wright with Health Access says Cal­i­for­nia needs to move quickly on health reform imple­men­ta­tion and Med­ic­aid expan­sion. He says the state needs to change the eli­gi­bil­ity rules and expand Medi-Cal, and change the rules in the insur­ance mar­ket so peo­ple are no longer denied cov­er­age because of pre-existing con­di­tions. The health ben­e­fit exchange, called “Cov­ered Cal­i­for­nia,” will ini­tially pro­vide insur­ance to nearly one mil­lion Cal­i­for­ni­ans start­ing next year.
